The Walking Dead's 'Pokémon GO' Competitor Looks...Interesting

Pokémon GO planed a lot of seeds in game developers’ minds a year and a half ago, and it seems that some of them are finally starting to sprout. After a stretch of time with practically zero competition, other IPs are now trying to make their own AR/location-based games. We saw Jurassic World Alive last week where you track down dinosaurs, but now we’re seeing more footage from a game I heard about a while back, The Walking Dead: Our World.

I’ve previously said that I thought that a number of IPs could do well with this kind of concept, and one of them actually was The Walking Dead, before the game was even announced. This new trailer is showing actual gameplay footage for the first time, and I have to say…I don’t hate it?

We are in way different territory than Pokémon GO here, given that you’re not catching anything, and instead slaughtering zombies en masse. You walk around town and run into different pockets of zombies at various difficulty levels, and use your phone to gun them down in AR mode. Since this is TWD-branded, you also have “assists” coming in from well-known Walking Dead characters like Daryl, Michonne and Carl.

I think this is kind of cool. I can see an AR/location game like this working well as a looter, as this footage shows how you level up different rarities of weapons, and I’m guessing you might get to level up your assist characters as well. This seems like it has the potential to be a lot different thanPokémon GO while channeling some of its core success into a new concept.

I do worry somewhat about the execution. The game isn’t exactly phenomenal looking, and I have not been a fan of the other Walking Dead mobile games like No Man’s Land, where this is being developed by the same team. I’m also concerned about any location game trying to compete with Niantic and its massive network of Ingress portals that it can build these worlds around. Without that data, other competitors may be more out in the cold trying to develop their own global phenomenons. Just ask rural Pokémon GOplayers how fun the game is without spawns or landmarks in their area.

While I really couldn’t care much about farming dinosaurs in Jurassic World Alive, I am genuinely hopeful that Our World could turn out to be cool. As we finish up Gen 3, I’m just not all that into Pokémon GO these days as we move into generations of the handheld I’ve never even played, and as the weather warms up yeah sure, I’d be down with hunting some zombies on the streets of Chicago, provided the gameplay is fun enough to make the game worthwhile.

These kinds of games are tough to make, which is why we haven’t seen all that many worthwhile competitors, but I am hoping that someone else can succeed in the space besides Pokémon GO. Niantic’s next project is a big Harry Potter game with Warner Bros, which seems like the logical successor to the throne, but I’m curious if outside developers might be able to score a win as well. I definitely don’t think it’s a guarantee that Our World will be a hit, but I’m really hoping it delivers on its potential, and I’m not un-interested based on the new footage above. Now, what’s the release date on this thing, AMC?
